Jekyll and Hyde-Silent Film with musical performance by the Invincible Czars

Audiences all over the US have eagerly gathered in art house cinemas to experience The Invincible Czars’ intricately crafted and precisely performed silent film soundtracks. The band aims to give modern day movie-goers a musical context through which they can better appreciate the importance and artistry of silent era films. Their catalog includes horror, fantasy and westerns movies. They are currently touring the US and Canada with Jekyll and Hyde.

The Invincible Czars make quirky, bold music for lovers of everything in the “other” category. Inspired by comics, sci-fi, fantasy & horror stories, cartoons, comedians, and classical composers, they’re eclectic, dynamic and always have a cinematic flair. In 1998, guitarist Josh Robins started recording musical themes into his four-track recorder that sounded more like bits of movie scores than indie rock songs. He needed more than the usual guitar, bass, and drums to realize these budding rock symphonies; he taught himself to read music, began writing pieces for instruments he couldn’t play, and eventually assembled the first line-up of The Invincible Czars. Since those early days, the Invincible Czars have evolved from a novel act in Austin’s Red River scene to a reverse classical-crossover powerhouse playing all over the US, blending influences as disparate as Tchaikovsky and Van Halen. Whether they’re playing a rock show in a club, a live silent film soundtrack in a theater, or a holiday event in a park, The Invincible Czars are always entertaining and out of the ordinary. Their musicianship is complemented with humor, magic tricks, fun and wacky wardrobe, and occasional minor acrobatics.

Are We Crazy About Our kids? Documentary Film and Panel Discussion

“Every dollar we put into high-quality early childhood education we get $7 back in reduced teen pregnancy, improved graduation rates, improved performance in school, reduced incarceration rates. The society as a whole does better.” President, Barack Obama

Studies show that early childhood education is one of the best investments we can make, yet the West Sonoma County and Russian River Area has the 2nd highest rate of 3-4 year old children not enrolled in public or private school in Sonoma county and the highest rate in the county for 3-4 year old females not enrolled in school.

The Russian River Cradle to Career Collaborative is planning an "Are We Crazy About Our Kids"  film screening and panel discussion during the Week of the Young Child on Thursday, April 27th at the Rio Theater in Monte Rio. This documentary brings to life critical studies by renowned economists and Nobel laureates to showcase why investing in early childhood education is so vital. The panel of local early childhood education stakeholders and experts will discuss local challenges and opportunities to support the development of the next generation of leaders, workers and community members.

We invite you to come to learn about this key issue and how you can be a part of the effort to ensure that every child in the lower Russian River Area has access to high quality early childhood education to prepare them for success. Please mark your calendars and RSVP at this link https://rrkids.eventbrite.com. Please also share with anyone who might me interested.

Event Details:

  • 6:30-7:00 Reception/Networking

  • 7-7:30 Film

  • 7:30-8:15 Panel Discussion

  • 8:30 Close of Event

Free popcorn and water. Snackbar open for service.

Big Oil Whistleblower film and Q&A with Filmaker John Bolenbaugh

Big Oil Whistleblower Is about John Bolenbaugh finding and exposing an enormous amount of oil remaining in the environment from the Kalamazoo Oil Spill as a cleanup worker. In the summer of 2010, millions of gallons spilled into Talmadge Creek and Kalamazoo River. Enbridge, the Canadian Oil Company responsible, and the EPA signed off on these sites as 100% clean by the fall of 2010. John, armed with his rake and Blackberry phone, recorded thousands of hours of finding oil left in Michigan waterways after the cleanup was declared done. For years, he interviewed hundreds of victims and heard their stories. He was harassed and threatened with arrest by the Enbridge security forces many times over the course of this journey. John’s efforts helped to force Enbridge to completely clean up the affected areas; multiple times, in some cases.

Independent filmmaker, activist and water protector John Bolenbaugh will be at the showing and will participate in a Q&A session after the film.

$5.00 suggested donation for film.

Harry Houdini - Magic Among the Spirits

Harry Houdini's grand illusions and daring escape acts made him one of the most famous magicians of all time.  Houdini also  campaigned against fraudulent psychic mediums. Houdini and his wife Bess made a pact that the first to die would try to communicate from beyond the grave with the survivor. Houdini died first on October 31st, 1926.  So for ten consecutive years Mrs. Houdini held a seance trying to reach the spirit of Houdini. The final was held in Los Angeles in 1936.

On October 31st, 1964 the first Harry Houdini seance was held in Sonoma County, California.  Held in secret locations throughout the county, it was organized and publicized by Petaluma’s Argus Courier newspaper columnist Bill Soberanes. It soon became an annual Halloween event for the next 37 years. Attended by local magicians, friends of Houdini and many special guests.
